Our Trust of Schools

English (Template)

Our English department is dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of key ideas, issues, and themes. Housed in six adjacent classrooms, our team consists of six passionate full- and part-time teachers, supported by dedicated Additional Needs specialists. We challenge students to think independently while providing the support they need to develop and express their ideas confidently. Through reading, creative and non-fiction writing, spoken language, and drama-based activities, students will build critical thinking skills and a strong command of communication.

What makes us special?

English at Honiton Community College is a vibrant and engaging subject, brought to life by a team of passionate teachers who inspire a love of language and literature. Our diverse and carefully selected texts expose students to a wide range of voices, cultures, and perspectives, encouraging them to think critically and creatively. With a curriculum that challenges students to develop their analytical, writing, and communication skills, we foster independence and confidence in every learner. At the heart of our approach is a supportive and inclusive environment, where students are encouraged to take risks, express their ideas, and grow as thoughtful, articulate individuals.

Assessment

Assessment in English at KS3 is an ongoing process, combining both summative and formative approaches to track progress and support learning. Each cycle, students complete a range of assessments, including extended responses and multiple-choice questions, allowing teachers to identify strengths and areas for development. At KS4, students are assessed through structured formative assessments and end-of-term mock examinations. These assessments provide valuable insights that inform lesson planning, ensuring targeted support and continuous improvement for every student.

Progression & careers

English opens doors to a wide range of opportunities beyond KS4, both in further education and future careers. At KS5, students can deepen their understanding by studying A-Level English Literature or English Language, developing advanced analytical, writing, and communication skills. These skills are highly valued in many career paths, including journalism, publishing, law, teaching, marketing, and public relations. Beyond A-Levels, students can pursue university degrees in English, creative writing, media, and related fields, or opt for vocational courses and apprenticeships that require strong literacy and communication abilities. Whether aiming for higher education or the workplace, studying English equips students with the critical thinking and language skills needed to thrive in a wide range of professions.
