Success for all

Careers information, advice and guidance is an extremely important part of a student’s journey

Careers information, advice and guidance is an extremely important part of a student’s school journey.

All students in all years will receive a programme incorporating employers, workplace visits, curriculum input, further and higher education institutions, labour market information and personal guidance. Where important decisions are about to be made, students will have access to impartial and qualified Careers Advice. Examples of this are the year 9 GCSE subject choice options, year 10 Futures Week in the summer term, year 11 Post 16 applications in the autumn term and year 12 & 13 – Post 18 options.

The principles behind our careers advice:

PERSONAL GUIDANCE

Employer contact

We are always really keen to hear from employers who are passionate about supporting young people. Can you spare some time to support a young person’s career preparation in any of the following ways?

Mentoring, regular part-time work placements, workplace set projects, mock interviews, digital or CV advice, inspirational or relatable talks about career journeys, engaging activities, employability skills – networking, communication

If you are keen to support in some way, please don’t hesitate to email our designated Careers Lead, Selena Burroughs, Selena.Burroughs@honiton.college .

Additional Information and Resources

There is so much information online now that it can be hard to know where to start and which to use. With this in mind, we have compiled a list of reputable resources.

LOCAL ENTERPRISE PARTNERSHIP

The Local Enterprise Partnership is funded to provide impartial and up-to-date resources. Its NEW padlet is full of information and is updated twice a week.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprenticeships are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to university. Their website provides details of local and national apprenticeship vacancies.

NOTGOINGTOUNI.CO.UK

This website is great to give students an idea of companies that offer new routes into careers. Many of these vacancies are national, however we can support students with searching for similar opportunities in the area.

UCAS

Navigating university progression can be overwhelming! UCAS makes the process easy for both parents and students to follow, with a dedicated section for each. Students will be introduced to this site whilst attending college.

PROSPECTS

Prospects is an intuitive website where students take quizzes, browse undergraduate subject choices and plan forwards or work backwards. Students can see what careers they can progress to and discover entry requirements for university degrees.

Learn About the Labour Market – ‘The Future’

Learning about which industries are set to grow locally and nationally in the short, medium and longer term is really important when students are deciding what subjects to study. If you can look at labour market information with your student/s then you can begin the conversations early and sow the seed. This can prove inspirational for students who aren’t sure of what they wish to do. If they can at least find an industry that they are interested in or a cause they are passionate about, then this is a great start on their career path!
