We want to make sure that we are providing your child with the best education and support we can. Healthy school food has obvious benefits and can help students to establish good habits for life. It can also help to improve their readiness to learn.

Free school meals at Honiton Community College
Families who receive certain benefits may be eligible for free school meals. Your child is eligible for free school meals if you’re in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit with an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400.
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- The guarantee element of Pension Credit
- Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for the four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
- Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual income of no more than £16,190
The benefits of free school meal provision at Honiton Community College
Registering for free meals could also raise an extra £985 for the College, to fund valuable support like extra tuition, additional teaching staff and after school activities. This additional money is available from central government for every child whose parent is receiving one of the benefits listed above.
GOVERNMENT FUNDING
The Government provides schools with a funding allocation called Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) which is additional to main school funding. This funding is provided to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. PPG funding has been based on ‘Ever 6’ FSM, (students who have been entitled to Free School Meals at any time in the last 6 years).
QUALITY TEACHING
At Honiton Community College we take a tiered approach to Pupil Premium spending. Teaching is our top priority, including professional development, training and support for early career teachers. Good teaching is the most important lever schools have to improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils. Using the Pupil Premium Grant to improve teaching quality benefits all students and has a particularly positive effect on children eligible for the Pupil Premium.
TARGETED SUPPORT
We use targeted support for struggling pupils; as well as strategies that relate to non-academic factors, including improving attendance, behaviour and social and emotional support. We continue to employ our Wellbeing Support team to provide targeted support for Pupil Premium students with emotional or social problems.
AUTOMATED ELIGIBILITY CHECKING SOFTWARE
Honiton Community College has invested in software that will periodically check whether children qualify for this support. There are strict criteria to qualify for this funding but what has become apparent over the last few years is that family circumstances can change suddenly and whilst you may not qualify for support now, you may in future.
