Music at Honiton Community College

Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging. In our schools, music can bring communities together through the shared endeavour of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and, through the love of listening to friends and fellow pupils, performing. The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust which make a great school. DFE March 2021

Key Stages and Curriculum Maps

We are committed to equality and diversity and continue to work towards a fully inclusive curriculum.

Throughout Key Stage 3 students build on both practical and theoretical knowledge of music from around the World and through time. Year 7 has topics from song writing based on the legends of Dartmoor through to studying Gamelan Music from Indonesia. Year 8 look at rhythm in more detail and study world music such as reggae and steel pans and in year 9 students enter into the world of Baroque music, minimalism, electronic music and more. All of these topics are designed to prepare students to take a GCSE in the subject.

At Key Stage 4 students currently follow the AQA GCSE Music course. The core content includes performing, composing and listening and appraising music. There are 4 areas of study; The Western classical tradition (1650 – 1910), Popular music, Traditional music and the Western classical tradition since 1910.

We are excited to announce that HCC will be running an AS and A Level in Music Technology starting in September 2022. Music technology, without the music theory. Students will Use production tools and techniques to capture, edit, process and mix an audio recording. Create, edit, manipulate and structure sounds to produce a technology-based composition.
