We believe that learning beyond the curriculum develops and extends our students, and enhances rapport and mutual respect. We have a rich and exciting range of extended learning and extra-curricular programmes for all year groups, both during and after school. Our students benefit from activities, events, competitions and visiting speakers who help to bring learning to life.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award offered by Honiton Community College
The Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award is a life-changing experience for our young people. It is an opportunity to discover new interests and talents, and to develop essential skills for life and work. During their time at the College, students have the opportunity to complete the DofE programme at three different levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold.
What does the Duke of Edinburgh Award involve?
The DofE award is for all of our students. Achieving the award is not about competition or winning, but about setting personal challenges, developing resilience and pushing boundaries.
There are four sections to complete for the Bronze and Silver levels and five at Gold. They involve helping the local community, becoming fitter, developing new skills and completing an expedition.
VOLUNTEERING
Volunteer in the local community, helping others whilst improving communication skills.
PHYSICAL
Learn a new sport and improve physical wellbeing.
SKILLS
Develop a new skill, gaining confidence and idenifying new areas of interest.
EXPEDITION
Improve teamwork skills and develop independence whilst taking part in overnight expeditions.
RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITY
For Gold only, work with a team on a residential activity.
Ten Tors Case Study
The College has a very strong tradition in outdoor and adventure activities. For many years we have entered numerous teams in the Ten Tors challenge.
This involves a significant commitment from the students over a number of preparatory walks before they take on the challenge of walking 35 miles, 45 miles or 55 miles over a weekend in May. Ten Tors is an amazing experience and involves approximately 4000 young people from the south-west and beyond. Students learn specific skills and abilities to do with survival in the outdoors such as navigation, campcraft and endurance alongside other transferable skills and abilities such as tenacity, resilience, teamwork, leadership and much more.
Outdoor pursuits at Honiton Community College
We are developing an exciting Outdoor Education Pursuits Programme at the College. This will provide a wide variety of opportunities for our students and is an excellent opportunity to develop their physical, social and mental health outside a classroom.
