Science at Honiton Community College

The Science department at Honiton Community College strives to engage our students so they will be excited and inspired by science, provide outstanding teaching so that our students have an amazing learning experience, share our enthusiasm for science with our students through our lessons and STEM activities, encourage students to gain independence and resilience in their science thinking.

We aim to work with that sense of discovery and questioning that all children are born with and teach them how to understand the scientific and technological discoveries that enrich all of our lives.

Key Stages and Curriculum Maps

We are committed to equality and diversity and continue to work towards a fully inclusive curriculum.

Our key stage 3 curriculum provides ‘awe and wonder’ and allows for a seamless transition from primary school. The curriculum starts by introducing the students to the basic science skills that they will need and will build on in the following years. The students will then be taken through a variety of topics that cover the basic foundations of different scientific concepts. The scientific concepts and skills are strategically built on throughout the next 3 years to ensure that students can link their scientific ideas and understanding together.

At key stage 4 the curriculum continues to build on the scientific concepts covered throughout key stage 3. The students develop a deeper understanding of the disciplinary and substantive knowledge that makes up science in everyday life. Throughout key stage 4 students will develop independence in their disciplinary knowledge.

At this level students can choose to study either Combined Science: Trilogy (2 GCSEs) or Separate Sciences (3 GCSEs). Separate science provides a great opportunity for students to take their scientific understanding to the next level and provides a smoother progression in to A Level sciences.

Exam Board: AQA

At key stage 5 students can choose from the following options:

BTEC Applied Science

Applied Science is intended as an Applied General qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, possibly in the applied science sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level and aims to give a coherent introduction to study of the applied science sector. The course consists of a mixture of written assessments and examinations.

A Level Biology

In A level biology we build on the concepts covered at GCSE to provide a thorough and deep understanding of biological principles. The content covered is interesting, thought provoking and broad to support a progression into further learning or a range of careers. We intertwine practical work as relevant to the material covered so that the disciplinary science supports the substantive knowledge. Math skills are an integral part of biology and we build this into our learning at relevant places along the curriculum to support students in this aspect of their learning. This course is 100% examination based.

AQA Combined Science Trilogy

A Level Chemistry

This chemistry course will provide you with an understanding of the chemical reactions that permeate our lives both in natural phenomena and the manufacture of modern materials. It will also show how the chemistry that we utilise every day affects the world we live in, touching upon diverse subjects such as economics, manufacturing, cuisine and climate change. This course is 100% examination based.

AQA Combined Science Trilogy

A level Physics

Physics answers big questions such as ‘How was the universe created?’ and ‘What is matter made of?’. Physics is a practical subject which opens many doors and builds your problem solving skills. This course is 100% examination based.
