Sports & Physical Education

Success for all

Mr A Taylor

Head of Sport and Physical Education

Sport at Honiton Community College

Physical Education is vital in maintaining student’s health, fitness and well-being. Sport and PE is used to improve mental health and well-being for all our students. Our Sports Academy and PE Highly Able Programme provides opportunities for our elite athletes to excel in their field. The purpose of the PE curriculum and enrichment programme is to provide opportunity for high quality teaching and learning; improving students knowledge and ensuring lifelong participation and enjoyment in sport, physical activity and fitness.

Underpinning the curriculum design is the College mission statement “Success for All”. Our curriculum is inclusive for all abilities, supporting students with potential to become elite athletes and support more reluctant students in finding a sport and/or activity they can commit to and enjoy.

Key Stages and Curriculum Maps

We are committed to equality and diversity and continue to work towards a fully inclusive curriculum.

In Key Stage 3 we expose students to a broad and balanced curriculum which provides them with the opportunity to master fundamental skills which underpin sports performance across a wide range of sporting contexts:

  • Learn about Healthy, Active lifestyles and Well-Being
  • Developing our Physical and Mental Capacity
  • Making and Applying Decisions
  • Developing Skills in Physical Activity
  • Evaluating and Improving

In lesson time and within our extensive enrichment programme.

Within Key Stage 4 we provide students with the opportunity to study a greater depth of knowledge within the subject via GCSE Physical Education. Across both key stages, knowledge is sequenced coherently via our SOL. Students receive 2-hours per week of Core PE in Key Stage 4 building upon and extending the work covered in Key Stage 3 with opportunities to participate in a range of sports, develop their fitness and sports leadership – encouraging life-long participation and learning about healthy, active lifestyles and well-being.
